Q |
How can we find
any book? Or How can one find
his/her book? Or How books are
arranged on the shelves? |
|
A |
The arrangement of
the books is done according to a
classification system called Dewey
Decimal Classification (DDC). This
is one of the renowned library
classification systems being used
throughout the world. In this
classification knowledge has been
divided into ten classes from
000-999.
Classification numbers Used for
000 Generalities (computer
science, media and communication
etc.)
100 Philosophy and Psychology
200 Religion
300 Social Sciences
400 Language
500 Pure Sciences
600 Applied Sciences/Technology
700 Arts and sports
800 Literature
900 Geography and History
Books are arranged in ascending
order from 000—999 on the shelves.
Each & above main classes have
their subclasses. For example:
600 is used for applied sciences
650 for Management & auxiliary
services
658.4 for General Management
658.5 for Executive Management
658.49 for Personal aspects of
executive management
658.492 for Leadership
In DDC point (.) is used after
first three digits. However for
each classification numbers at
least three digits from 000-999
must be assigned for every book.
658.492 for Leadership

Q |
At the spine label
there is some other numbers and
Alphabets, what are those?
|
|
A |
At the Hajvery
library, spine label bears four
things for example:
R Row (1)
58.4 (2)
HEL-E (3)
20612 (4)
Row (1) is the indication of
section like R stands for
reference section, T stands for
textbooks, and W. B. stands for
world bodies section etc. Books
of general collection section
have no such mark it means that
these can be borrowed and others
can’t.
Row (2) is the classification
number, which we have assigned
from Dewey Decimal
Classification (DDC). Its
arrangement is in ascending
order from 000-999.
Row (3) is the indication of
Authors or Bookmark. The author
mark is combination of, first
three characters of the author’s
last name and firs character of
title of the book (avoiding the,
a, an). In the above example
title of the book is “Essential
manager’s manual” written by
“Robert Heller”. We took “HEL”
from author’s last name and “E”
from the title of the book. So
the complete author mark of the
book will be “HEL-E”. In case of
absence of personal author e.g.
(editor, translator, compiler
etc.) we use first three letters
of the title of both.
Author mark or bookmark helps us
in arranging the books on the
shelves. When there are many
books under the same
classification number, and the
classification numbers are same
for more than one book, we
arrange them, firstly according
to classification number from
000-999 (in ascending order),
then in alphabetical order from
A to Z.. In this practice we
consider each letter of author
or bookmark one by one.
Row (4) is the accession number
of the library. It is basically
the inventory number of the
Accession Register. This is the
unique number, which is from 1-n
and is allotted when the library
material is brought in the
library record. It also helps in
arrangement of the books on the
shelves. When classification and
author mark or book mark are
same we arrange the book firstly
according to classification
number then according to author
mark or book mark and in case
same of above we arrange the
books through accession numbers.
From 1-n. |

number |
